Irving's "The Wife" portrays the woman as subservient. He illustrates the life a "privileged" woman and describes women as delicate, needy, and task-limited. The woman was needed more as a support system and a dependent rather than an equal member of the household. I do think that he has portrayed many of the great qualities about women, even though left out things Americans give women credit for today. For the most part women are given equal opportunity and credit in modern day relationships. Women offer as much supports, whether that be financial or emotional, as their male counterparts. Unlike the story, women in today's society are well integrated in the work force and have equal opportunity. In all, Irving pointed out many of the unique qualities about women. They are supportive, emotional capable, and adaptive, but they also have the ability to be the equal or even leading partner in a relationship or society.
